What Will Shape Humanity's Future?

Leadership That Unites Us or That Divides Us?

Yesterday, I sat through Pauline Hanson’s press club address.

Not because I agree or disagree with her politics, but because I wanted to understand the message, the narrative, and why some people are connecting with it in the wake of recent elections. I wanted to hear it from her perspective rather than through the lens of media commentary.

What struck me wasn’t the politics. It was the leadership style!

Pauline is purporting far right political stance and taken her cue from the divisive playbook.

Across the world, we are seeing a growing trend of leaders gaining traction through division. These leaders create an “us versus them” mentality, amplifying fear, blame, outrage, and separation. Whether we agree with them or not, this style of leadership appears to be resonating with many people.

That should give us all pause!  This isn’t a political conversation. It’s a human one.

👉 Have We Forgotten the Lessons of History?

History has repeatedly shown us the consequences of division.

Time and again, societies have prospered when people found common ground and worked towards a shared future. Equally, history reveals the devastation that can occur when fear, prejudice, tribalism, and division take hold.

We often repeat the phrase, “Lest we forget.” Yet I find myself wondering whether we truly remember. It pains me to think that many people either have forgotten or were never taught what they needed to remember.

The lessons are there.  The evidence is there.  The warnings are there.

Yet around the world we continue to see increasing polarisation in politics, workplaces, communities, social media, and even within families.

As conflicts escalate and divisions deepen, I find myself asking a fundamental question:

How do we evolve as a human race if we continue to define ourselves by our differences rather than our shared humanity?club

The Rise of Divisive Leadership

Divisive leadership is not new, neither is authoritarianism. 🚧

It has existed throughout human history because it appeals to some of our most primitive instincts. Fear creates urgency. Blame creates certainty. Division creates a sense of belonging for those who feel unheard, unseen, or left behind. Self-indulgence and ego-driven decisions create chaos and unintended consequences (Trump and Iran being just one example).

It is often easier to identify an enemy than it is to solve a complex problem. The challenge is that divisive leadership may win attention, gain followers, and even achieve short-term outcomes. However, it rarely creates sustainable solutions.

The question is not whether divisive leadership works, but whether it creates the kind of future we want to leave behind?

The Case for Unitive Leadership 💡

I believe the answer lies in Unitive Leadership. Not leadership that demands conformity. Not leadership that suppresses debate. Not leadership that expects everyone to think the same way.

Quite the opposite.

Unitive leadership creates space for diversity of thought while maintaining a commitment to shared humanity. It seeks understanding before judgment. Collaboration before conflict. Contribution before self-interest. Responsibility before blame. Unitive leadership recognises that people can disagree respectfully while still working towards a common purpose. It acknowledges complexity rather than reducing every issue to simplistic narratives.

Most importantly, it asks a powerful question: What serves the greater good?

Why Unitive Leadership Is So Difficult…

The reality is that unitive leadership is not easy. It requires significant personal development. It demands self-awareness, humility, emotional intelligence, courage, and the willingness to challenge our own assumptions and biases. It requires us to manage our egos rather than be driven by them.

  • To listen rather than react. To seek understanding rather than validation.
  • To remain curious when others become certain.
  • To remain compassionate when others become hostile.
  • To remain focused on solutions when others become consumed by blame.
  • This is why unitive leadership is not a destination.
  • It is a lifelong practice.

A daily commitment. A conscious choice.

One Planet. One Future.

We spend billions searching for other planets to inhabit while overlooking the most extraordinary one we already call home. I have travelled to many corners of this remarkable planet and I remain in awe of its beauty, diversity, and resilience.

This planet is worth fighting for! It is worth protecting. It is worth leaving better than we found it.

And it is not too late.

The future of humanity will not be determined solely by politicians, governments, corporations, or institutions. It will be shaped by the choices each of us makes every day. How we lead. How we treat others. How we respond to difference. How willing we are to build bridges instead of walls.

🤝 Our Shared Responsibility

Every one of us, regardless of status, wealth, influence, title, or position, has a responsibility to contribute to something greater than ourselves. We all have unique gifts, talents, experiences, and perspectives. The question is not whether we can make a difference. The question is whether we choose to. Perhaps the future we create depends less on what divides us and more on what we choose to build together.

Because humanity evolves when leadership moves from “me” to “we”, from power over others to responsibility for all.

And maybe that is the leadership humanity needs most right now.
